The 'lei-watersloot' running in front of the house is the last remaining section of the original open water lead-lined furrow which supplied water to the Oudtshoorn of old.To preserve the water furrow,Victorian trellis and historical façade,the property was declared as a National Monument in 1988.
As a matter of interest, “Veldskoendorp” was renamed “Oudtshoorn” after Baron Pieter van Rheede van Oudtshoorn who came to South Africa in 1741 and was appointed Governor of the Cape in 1772. He died aboard ship while returning to the Cape in 1773.
